Welcome

Overview:

Project Description:

Lower Lake Safety project aims to improve safety for everyone who uses the road. Potential changes include:

  • Narrow vehicle lanes from 12 feet to 11 feet.
  • Add space on the shoulder for people walking and riding bikes.
  • Add lighting to make it easier to see at night.
  • Add sidewalks.
  • Add two crosswalks with pedestrian hybrid beacons (PHB). The PHBs will show red lights for drivers when pedestrians push the buttons to cross the highway.
  • Upgrade guardrail to current standards.
  • Add rumble strip on the shoulder to alert drivers when they drift out of the lane.
  • Add raised concrete medians to slow drivers. This could make crossing the street easier for people who are walking.

Purpose:

The purpose of this project is to improve safety for all road users and to reduce the frequency and severity of collisions occurring within the project limits.

Need:

This project was initiated in response to Traffic Investigation Report (TIR) 231-0012MZ. The TIR reported 1 fatal and 3 serious injury collisions out of 16 total collisions within the two years from January 2019 to December 2020. Collisions in the dark account for 9 of the 16 collisions. The TIR recommended speed management elements.
