Gateway for Monterey Bay: Community Survey

Have you ever felt uncomfortable walking across Canyon Del Rey Boulevard to get to Laguna Grande Park? Or struggled to cross Del Monte Boulevard to get to the Coastal Trail on your bike? Have you had to...

Project Description:

Caltrans District 5, along with project partners: the Transportation Agency for Monterey County (TAMC), Association of Monterey Bay Area Governments (AMBAG), City of Seaside (Seaside), and City of Sand City (Sand City), are applying for funding for a suite of multi-modal improvements through the California Active Transportation Program (ATP).

The project will focus improvements along (and parallel to) Del Monte Boulevard between Laguna Grande FORTAG entrance and Playa Avenue, and along State Route 218 (Canyon Del Rey Boulevard) between Del Monte Boulevard and Fremont Boulevard. You can see a map and examples of these improvements below.

This will include a variety of comfortable, protected bike facilities and crossing improvements that will connect neighborhoods to key destinations:

  • Class IV bikeways between FORTAG and State Route 218 (SR 218) on Del Monte Boulevard and between Del Monte Boulevard and Freemont Boulevard on SR 218
  • Protected intersection at Del Monte and SR 218
  • A multiuse Class I path parallel to Del Monte Boulevard in Sand City
  • Intersection crossing enhancements at Del Monte Boulevard on SR 218
  • A road diet between Fremont Boulevard and Del Monte Boulevard on SR 218
  • Roundabout at Harcourt Avenue
  • Class II bike lanes between SR 218 and Fremont Boulevard on Harcourt Ave
  • Intersection crossing enhancements at Hilby Avenue and SR 218, and Del Monte Boulevard and Broadway

Del Monte Boulevard and SR 218 currently have little to no bike infrastructure despite these roads being critical community connectors for travelers of all modes. There are also few crossing opportunities on Del Monte Boulevard and SR 218, and many of the ones that do exist are uncomfortable. These project elements have been designed and packaged to provide better access to existing bike and pedestrian infrastructure such as the Monterey Bay Recreational Trail, Fort Ord Recreational Trail and Greenway (FORTAG), Lower Broadway enhancements, and MST's multi-use trail between Highway 1 and Playa Avenue. Destinations such as the beach, Laguna Grande park, Seaside Library, Sand City's Art Park, grocery stores, restaurants, Seaside high school, and Monterey peninsula will be more easily accessible via walking, biking, and rolling.
