State Route 68 Comprehensive Multimodal Corridor Plan
State Route 68 Comprehensive Multimodal Corridor Plan
The State Route 68 (SR 68) Comprehensive Multimodal Corridor Plan (CMCP) evaluates potential transportation improvements along the eastern segment of the SR 68 corridor between State Route 1 and Blanco Road in Salinas.
Overview
Plan Description:
The SR 68 CMCP builds on previous efforts to establish a long‑range, community‑driven vision for the corridor and advances statewide goals outlined in the California Transportation Plan 2050 and the Climate Action Plan for Transportation Infrastructure. The plan concentrates on the eastern portion of the SR 68 corridor between the State Route 1 interchange in Del Monte Oaks to Blanco Road in Salinas. It identifies and supports projects that enhance safety, expand access to economic opportunities, and reduce vehicle miles traveled by improving multimodal options such as walking, biking, and transit. This effort is led by the California Department of Transportation District 5 (Caltrans) in collaboration with the Transportation Agency for Monterey County (TAMC).

Brief Corridor Summary
State Route 68 (SR 68) serves as an important interregional link between the Monterey Peninsula and the City of Salinas, Monterey County’s two largest urbanized areas. The corridor experiences substantial commuter and recreational travel, particularly because it connects to Highway 1 and provides access to the Monterey Peninsula. As one of the few east-west routes between inland communities and U.S. Highway 101, SR 68 also supports travel to popular destinations such as Laguna Seca Raceway, Fort Ord National Monument, Pebble Beach, and the Monterey Regional Airport. Its natural beauty and recreational importance have led to its designation as a scenic highway in California’s State Scenic Highway System
