A safety project is being initiated to improve State Route 1 (SR1) south of Fort Bragg at Simpson Lane. The project would improve safety for people in cars, walking, and riding bikes. Caltrans wants to hear about how you travel through the area.

This project is currently in PID phase. This phase of the project identifies key project features. It also sets the timeline and the budget. During this phase, Caltrans is looking for feedback on transportation needs and preliminary ideas.
Overview:
Caltrans is planning a safety project at Simpson Lane roundabout. The project proposes to:
Make Simpson Lane roundabout easier to use
Add crosswalks
Add medians islands to make it easier to cross the street
Add lighting to make it easier to see at night
Add pedestrian-activated flashing beacons at crosswalks
Add bike lanes
Reduce lane widths
Schedule:
Project Initiation: In progress, expected to be completed August 2026.
Project Approval and Environmental Document: January 2027 - May 2028
Final Project Design: November 2029
Construction: Summer 2030
