PCH Long Beach Bike Project | Survey
PCH Long Beach Bike Project | Survey
Caltrans is proposing a bike facility on the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) within the City of Long Beach to increase safety for all users. This project would provide improvements on the portion of the PCH between the Long Beach Traffic Circle and the LA River. This project will contribute to the growing bicycle network in the region and ensure that users of all abilities can travel safely on the State Highway System.
Community input is an essential part of this process, and feedback received will be incorporated into the development of the project. Please complete the survey below if you would like your comments to be included in the project planning process.
Design Alternative
The PCH is a state highway that currently consists of a center turn lane and three travel lanes in each direction. In various parts of the highway, the outermost lanes are available for street parking during non-peak hours. There are two alternatives being explored to redesign this road to increase accessibility for all users.
Alternative 1 would convert one lane into a Class-IV protected bicycle path in each direction. Alternative 1 would be constructed at a lower cost and would be completed sooner. Caltrans programs could fully fund this alternative.
Alternative 2 would remove one lane and construct a raised parkway for pedestrians and cyclists with landscape separations. While this alternative would provide greater separation between bicyclists and pedestrians with vehicles, Alternative 2 would reconstruct pavements and curb ramps that will be completed/completed soon. Funding for Alternative 2 is not secured and would require coordination with local and regional partners to identify additional funding opportunities.
Existing Conditions would have no changes to the existing roadway, and no proposed improvements would be made.
